Two words: Roller Derby.

It's the new punk rock phenomenon sweeping the nation- or at least Arizona. I went to the roller derby last night. It was pretty low key, and very much had the feel of a start up, grass-roots organization. It was cool- had a good vibe, but it could have been so much better. It needed three things: a better DJ, better announcers, and better bands. The girls on skates rocked, and the crowd was eclectic, but one announcer was just plain boring while the other one kept saying, "it's a family show." 98% of the audience was between the ages of 18 and 28; 92% of them were tattooed and/or pierced, and that's a conservative estimate. If she had just shut up about it being a family show and let herself go, I think she would have been a heck of a lot better. She could have made it a lot more fun. A better DJ would have given better structure to the matches, and better bands wouldn't have made my ears bleed.

It was a double header, so there were four teams skating. The Smash Squad vs. The Furious Truck Stop Waitresses (all the way from Tucson), and The Bruisers vs. The French Kiss Army. Punk cheerleaders vs. Skanky waitresses and Naughty nurses vs. Trashy French maids. Bloomers and fishnets and black hair and tattoos and skates. Oh my.

How could you not have fun watching that?
